White after Labor Day?

We’ve all heard the old wive’s tale, “Don’t wear white after Labor Day.” Well, don’t listen to those women! You can wear white after Labor Day!

White eyeshadow is having a moment in the spotlight lately, as evident on many-a Pinterest posts featuring the most nude neutral.

Start by applying a base to your look, I suggest Motives Eye Base. Next, use the white eye shadow of your choosing -  I like Motives Sparkle Pots in Heaven. Apply the eye shadow from the lash line up to your brow. Make sure the color isn’t too heavy or any other color will look very dramatic against it.

Next, blend a deep color into the crease of your eyes. For this look, I like Motives Pressed Eye Shadow in Midnight. Finish with a black or navy eyeliner and a few swipes of mascara and you are good to go!

So ladies, what are your tips for wearing white after Labor Day?

Perfect Brows in Five Steps

It is my belief that the eyebrows are the most under-utilized feature that can be dressed up with makeup. Brows play an essential role in your everyday look, they frame your face, after all! To get the perfect brows, follow these five simple steps.

First, measure the inside. Using a thin brush, such as Motives Angled Eyeliner Brush, line the tip of the brush parallel of your nose. Where the end of the brush hits is where the inside of your brow should be.

Second, measure the arch. To find the arch, use the same brush, but tilt the brush from the outside of the nostril about 45 degrees. Where the end of the brush hits is where your arch should be.

Third, measure the outside. Tilt the brush towards the outside of your nose so that the shaft of the brush hits on the outside of your eye. Where the end of the brush hits is where your brows should end.

Next, using your chosen Motives eye brow product – be it Motives Essential Brow Kit, Motives Eye Brow Pencil or Motives for La La Waterproof Eyebrow Pencil – swipe the wax and color or pencil along the shape of the brow in the shape you just determined.

Finally, using an eyebrow bush (either on the end of the Motives for La La Waterproof Eyebrow Pencil or located in either Motives Brush Sets), brush out any excess color for a natural look.

So ladies, what are your tips for great brows?

Our girl, La La Anthony, has graced the cover of the September issue of Juicy Magazine and is featured in a full four-page spread!

In the article, La La shows us her expansive closet in her Los Angeles home, including some of her favorite shoes (Christian Louboutin’s, thank you very much!) and her fashionable wardrobe. La La tells us that  feeling comfortable in your own skin and not being afraid to take risks are the hallmarks of her style transformation.

When La La is asked about her new makeup line, she tells Juicy, “I did Motives for La La… it definitely broadened the spectrum for African-American and Hispanic women…”

Fall Trends We Can’t Wait to Try

While Labor Day is the unofficial end of summer, the warm temps tell us otherwise. However, it’s never too early to start preparing for the Fall looks we’ve been looking forward to trying.

Fashion designers have their own unique touch – and we don’t just mean the clothes! Michael Kors loves a bold cheek, Gucci showcases dark, romantic lips and Valentino focused on grey eye shadows. Keep reading to be in-the-know about these up-coming trends everyone will be wearing.

Simply Flushed

As seen on Michael Kors’ runway models, true blush is going to be huge this season. These flushed cheeks should look like you’ve just finished skiing or have been in a hot tub with your main squeeze. To get the look, try using a creme blush in a sideways V, with the tip of the V hitting the apples of your cheeks. For a look that lasts, apply a similar shade of pressed blush over the creme blush.

Just Bitten Lips

The dark, romantic lip is back. The look for lips this Fall season is deep red or berry lips, as seen on the Gucci catwalks. For a look that is totally on trend, choose a color that resembles the color of your lips after just eating dark berries or plums. Keep your eyes simple to balance out this bold statement.

Grey Eyes

From silver to slate, grey eye shadow is hitting the scene in Fall 2012. Diane von Furstenburg and Valentino showcased this trendy look on their runways, and the look is easily duplicated. The look can be done a couple different ways – you can either try using two shades from the same color family for a  dimensional look or apply a wash of color (using only one shade, all around the eye).

So, my lovelies, which of these Fall looks are you dying to try?

Last week, we talked about Motives gaining exposure in Costa Rica. Well, we are at it again – this time in Spain!

Foundation Tips

We all love a foundation that stays right? One that doesn’t tend to slide off or melt away. Well here are a few tricks of the trade to keeping your foundation from slipping and sliding and maintaining a flawless face.

1. Choose the right formula of foundation: Different foundation formulas are tailored to work for different skin types. Make sure that when choosing one, you look to see if it contains any harsh chemicals or extra ingredients that may cause excess oil on your face.
2. Prime your face: Apply a face primer before you apply your foundation so that your foundation has something to grip to. When you apply a primer you give yourself a flawless canvas to work with (which also helps your foundation apply more evenly and smooth).
3. Apply your foundation with a brush: Applying your foundation with a brush is the key to a perfect face. The brush allows for even coverage without using too much product.
4. Use the right amount of product: Remember, a little foundation can go a very long way. Apply a small amount and see how that works for your skin. If you decide you need more you can always build up your coverage.
5. Keep skin clean: Exfoliate, moisturize, and get rid of excess oils so that when you do apply your foundation you have a clean canvas to apply to.

Get Rid of Boring Nails

I was fumbling around on Pinterest the other day when I stumbled on a great tutorial on how to water marble your nails. I figured since I didn’t have anything else to do I would give it a go. This design is perfect for someone who loves lots of color on their nails. What better way to wear all of your favorite colors than to mix them all together?

Marble Nails

It looked really simple! All you need is a cup of water about room temperature, some toothpicks, scotch tape, nail polish remover, paper towels and of course some fun nail polish!

To start, paint your nails like you normally would with an opaque polish. Then with your cup of water make sure it’s around room temperature – if it’s too cold the polish will seize up. Take your brush and let a big drop of polish fall into the cup of water, do the same with the rest of your polish choices.

Take your toothpick or orange stick if you’re feeling a little fancy, and drag the polish from the outside in until you reach the design you want. If you’re like me, things tend to get a little messy (that’s where the tape comes in) simply tape around the edges of your nails so that your fingers don’t become covered in polish.  After you’ve done all of this hold your hand horizontally and dip your nail into the cup making sure you cover it all, take your toothpick and gather up the polish around your nail. Take your nail out of the cup and let it dry before removing the tape, continue on all your nails until you have a work of art on your hands!

The first time I tried this it didn’t turn out so well but on the second go around it looked pretty cool! Remember have fun and try something new!
